Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: Amid protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday accused opposition parties of attempting to 'seize power' from her by orchestrating a 'Bangladesh-like movement' in the state.
The chief minister welcomed the Calcutta High Court's decision to grant a CBI probe into the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. She demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation expedite the process and ensure the guilty are hanged by August 18.
"We would abide by the Calcutta High Court's order and extend all support to the CBI. We have no problem with CBI being handed over the case as we want it solved at the earliest," she said as quoted by PTI.
The TMC supremo also urged the protesting doctors to end their strike and return to work, highlighting the severe impact on healthcare services.
On Tuesday, the high court transferred the doctor's rape and murder case from Kolkata Police to the CBI. "We have taken all possible actions in this case, but still, a malicious campaign is on,” she said while addressing a programme organised by the party on the eve of Independence Day. "Abuse me as much as you want, but please don't abuse the state,” she said.
West Bengal is in turmoil after the body of a woman doctor was found inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Friday. The 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor, who was on duty at the state-run hospital, was reportedly sexually assaulted and murdered on Thursday night. Officials discovered her semi-nude body in the seminar hall of the chest medicine department, with multiple injury marks.
