Heavy Rainfall iIn Kolkata: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday shared data on rainfall recorded in West Bengal’s capital Kolkata in September so far. As per the weather body, from September 1 to 22, the City of Joy received 178.6 mm of rain. However, in 24 hours from 8.30 am on Monday to 8.30 am on Tuesday, Kolkata recorded 247.4 mm of rain, mostly during the intervening night. This shows that the city witnessed more showers in a few hours than over 22 days of the month.

Reason For Heavy Rain In Kolkata

A low pressure area over coastal areas of Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and northwest Bay of Bengal is responsible for the heavy rain in areas like Kolkata, Hooghly and Howrah.

In view of the low pressure area, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over some districts of South Bengal, as per IMD.

Worst Hit Areas In Kolkata

As per the data of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Ballygunge (295 mm) is worst-hit by the rains. This is followed by Gariahat (262 mm), Jadavpur (258 mm), Alipore (240 mm) and Mukundapur (280 mm).imd

Kolkata Receives 2663 Per Cent More Rain

As per IMD’s data, Kolkata registered 2,663 per cent more rain in the 24 hours ending 8:30 am today than the long-term average rainfall for the city. Howrah followed second with 1,006 per cent more rain than the long-term average. Then came North 24 Parganas with 857 per cent more rain than the average.
