Kolkata News: Torrential rains lashed West Bengal's capital Kolkata and surrounding areas on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, throwing normal life out of gear. The heavy downpour has claimed five lives till now. Roads were flooded, railway and metro services were disrupted on Tuesday morning. Several schools were also shut as the city witnessed severe waterlogging. The rains inundated multiple residential areas, making commute difficult for the people.

Kolkata's Salt Lake area was completely waterlogged. People were seen wading through knee-deep water.

Traffics chaos was witnessed near Jadhavpur University as heavy rains caused severe waterlogging in the area.

Kolkata's Golf Green area was also waterlogged, making commute difficult for office-goers and school children.

Kolkata Metro And Rail Services Halted

Services on the Kolkata Metro Railway's Blue Line (Dakshineswar-Shahid Khudiram) have been suspended due to waterlogging on the central portion, especially between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Rabindra Sarovar stations.

A metro spokesperson told jagran.com that for the safety of passengers, services have been suspended between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations, while limited services are running from Dakshineswar to Maidan. Normal services are expected to resume soon.

An Eastern Railway official said train operations were completely halted in the Sealdah South section due to waterlogging on the tracks. Only nominal services were operating in the Sealdah North and Main sections. Trains from Howrah and Kolkata Terminal stations were also affected, and waterlogging in the Chitpur yard also halted trains on the Circular Railway Line.

Kolkata Waterlogging: Schools Closed

Heavy waterlogging on city roads brought traffic to a complete standstill on Tuesday. Office-goers faced significant inconvenience due to the lack of public transportation and traffic jams. Many schools declared holidays due to the heavy rain and waterlogging, jagran.com reported.
