A 44-year-old professor from Kolkata’s Jadavpur University identified as Mainak Pal was found dead in a hotel room in Uttarakhand, with his hand and throat slit. He was reportedly found in the bathroom of his hotel room in Lalkuan on Saturday.

The incident came after Pal had travelled to Uttarakhand for a short trip with two friends. While his friends carried on, he decided to return to Kolkata. He checked into a hotel in Lalkuan and was to board a train back home the next morning.

According to media reports, Pal had told his friends that he was missing his daughter and wanted to be home. His family called up the hotel when they were unable to reach Pal. Following this, the hotel staff broke the room’s door and found his body inside the bathroom.

He previously held positions at Jhargram Raj College and the Government General Degree College in Mejia before becoming a faculty member at Presidency University in 2015, where he served for almost seven years. In May 2022, he joined Jadavpur University as an associate professor.

Paul’s death has left his colleagues at Jadavpur University in deep shock. The Jadavpur University Teachers' Association expressed its sorrow, highlighting the lasting impact Paul had as a teacher. "We are in utter disbelief since hearing about his passing," Partha Pratim Roy, the general secretary of the teachers' body, was quoted as saying by NDTV.

“Pal was a lovable person and popular among students and the fraternity. The entire JU family is shell-shocked," Roy further said.
