Kolkata Rape Case: Kolkata court on Tuesday extended the police custody of three individuals accused of gang raping a first-year law student inside a city college. The alleged incident took place on the evening of June 25 at South Calcutta Law College.
The accused, Monojit Mishra, a former student and temporary staffer at the college and two current students, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee were arrested on June 26. They were first produced before the court on June 27 and remanded to four days of police custody. On Tuesday, they were brought before the Alipore Court again, where their custody was extended by eight more days, till July 8.
A fourth accused, Pinaki Banerjee, a security guard at the college, was arrested later on June 28. His police custody has been extended till July 4.
The investigating officer and public prosecutor sought more time for interrogation, stating that further questioning of the accused is necessary. The court accepted their request and extended the remand period.
Defence lawyers representing Mishra, Ahmed and Mukherjee did not apply for bail. Instead, they submitted that the accused are cooperating with the investigation and expressed their willingness to assist in uncovering the facts. They also appealed to the court to ensure that no media trial takes place before the case is legally concluded. The defence asked that the accused not be unfairly treated during the investigation process.
In the case of Pinaki Banerjee, his lawyer sought bail, citing his clean record and the fact that he had not abandoned his duty. The court, however, dismissed the bail plea and decided to extend his custody.
The police continue to investigate the case, which has sparked significant public and media attention.
