Kolkata Rain Updates: The West Bengal government on Tuesday informed that at least 10 people died and several others got injured due to record-breaking rainfall in Kolkata and nearby districts. While providing details, the officials stated that while eight people died due to accidental electrocution in Kolkata, two others lost their lives in similar incidents in the North and South 24 Parganas districts. The officials also informed that the capital city received the highest rainfall in 37 years, leading to the inconveniences. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has asked the residents to follow the guidelines and limit their outings to ensure safety.

Kolkata Rains: Here are the latest updates

- At least 10 people died in the deadly rainfall in Kolkata and nearby districts. The excessive rainfall has severely affected the transport and other sectors of the city.

- Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that she will not inaugurate Durga Puja mandaps on Tuesday due to the rainfall. Apart from this, all the political parties also cancelled their programs.

- Kolkata has received the sixth-highest single-day rainfall in the last 137 years in the past two days.

- The authority stated that the schools and other educational institutes will remain closed for the next two days.

- The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that several districts are likely to witness more rainfall for the next few days.

- The weather department also stated that the formation of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal led to the heavy rainfall.

- Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim stated that the situation went out of control as the city received over 300 mm of rain in just five hours.

- “It was almost like a cloudburst. It is scary and unprecedented. We have opened the gates so that water can drain out. But as even the canals, which crisscross the city, are all full to the brim, it is not helping,” Hakim stated.
