Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of Kolkata's RG Kar medical college, is currently under Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) radar in connection with the rape and murder of a 31-year-old female trainee doctor on August 9 at the hospital premises. Sandip Ghosh came under scanner after it was revealed that he allegedly tried to term the incident as a suicide. He is also allegedly blamed for revealing the victim's face and identity to the public.
Sandip Ghosh resigned from the position following public outrage. Ghosh alleged that he was being defamed on social media platforms following the rape and murder of postgraduate trainee doctor. Soon after, he was appointed the principal of Calcutta National medical college and hospital. He is also known to be close to Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders.
Dr Sandip Ghosh Career Timeline
-Before his position as the principal of RG Kar medical college and hospital, Dr Sandip Ghosh was the vice-principal at Calcutta National medical college. Ghosh is a surgeon and a professor of orthopedics.
-In June 2023, he was moved to Murshidabad medical college, after allegations of corruption surfaced. NDTV reported that after his transfer, he locked himself in the principal's office in Calcutta National medical college to prevent his replacement from taking over.
-Within 48 hours he was reinstated in his previous position. In September 2023, following a ragging-related incident, he was transferred to RG Kar medical college as principal.
Stint At RG Kar And Resignation
-Dr Sandip Ghosh started as the principal at RG Kar hospital on February 9, 2021. RG Kar experienced protests from more than 350 students who objected to the college authorities' refusal to establish separate councils for students and hostels, months after he took over the charge as the principal of the college. He was removed later.
-Some media reports in January 2023 also reported that Dr Ghosh was surrounded by a new controversy involving allegations that bodies brought in for autopsy were being utilised for "dissection practicals" without prior consent from the deceased's families. In response to these claims, Dr Ghosh pledged to conduct an internal investigation.
-Calcutta High Court on August 13 ordered that Sandip Ghosh should be put on an extended leave of absence while his role in the case was being investigated. The court also disapproved of his quick reappointment at Calcutta National medical college.
-Currently Sandip Ghosh has been taken for two rounds of questioning by the CBI. Officers questioned him about the 36-48 hours shifts being assigned to the doctor.
