Sanjay Roy's Niece Found Dead: Kolkata RG Kar doctor rape and murder convict Sanjay Roy's niece was found dead at her residence in Alipore, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. News10 reported on Tuesday that her body was found hanging from a noose inside a wardrobe. She was a minor.

According to the police report, the medea report, her family found her in an unconscious state in the room, after which they took her to the nearby hospital. Police lodged a case and initiated a probe into the demise. The preliminary post-mortem report found that the girl died due to hanging. However, it was not clear whether a suicide note was found at the spot or not. The police did not say anything about what had triggered the extreme step.

Roy Has Been Serviing Imprisonment For Life

Roy was sentenced to imprisonment for life till the end of his natural life by the Sealdah sessions court after having been found guilty of the rape and murder of the doctor on January 20.

The body of the on-duty post-graduate trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered, was found in the seminar room of the state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024, triggering countrywide protests.

CBI Moves HC Seeking Death Penalty For RG Case Convict

Meanwhile, the CBI, in January this year, filed an appeal before the Calcutta High Court, seeking death penalty for RG Kar hospital rape-murder case convict. A division bench, presided by Justice Debangsu Basak, said it will hear the CBI's appeal on January 27, along with a prayer by the West Bengal government seeking admission of its appeal with a similar plea.

The Central probe agency moved the bench, also comprising Justice Md Shabbar Rashidi, praying for hearing of its appeal on the claim of inadequacy of sentence given by a trial court to Roy.

The CBI had opposed the state's right to file an appeal in the case, claiming that it was the prosecuting agency and had the right to prefer the appeal on the grounds of inadequacy of sentence. Seeking capital punishment for Roy, the state's Advocate General Kishore Dutta had stated before the court that the life sentence to the convict till death was inadequate.
