A 20-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by two of her friends on her birthday in the Haridevpur area of South Kolkata, police said on Sunday. The incident took place on Friday, and the accused were identified as Chandan Malik and Deep, the latter reportedly a government employee.
According to the police the Haridevpur survivor claimed the assault occurred after Chandan brought her to Deep’s residence under the guise of celebrating her birthday.

"The woman's birthday was on Friday. On that occasion, the accused Chandan and Deep took the victim to the latter's flat. There, they had a meal. She said when she wanted to return home, the accused stopped her. They allegedly locked the door and gang-raped her," one of the police sources said.
Sources said the survivor managed to escape around 10:30 am on Saturday. After reaching home, she informed her family, leading to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections the same day.
"We have started a search for the accused who went missing after the assault," the source said.
In her complaint, she stated that she had met Chandan several months ago, who claimed to be the head of a major Durga Puja committee in South Kolkata. Through him, she was introduced to Deep, and the three had been in contact since then. She further added that the two accused had promised to involve her in the Durga Puja committee.
In a separate incident, after spending four days in police custody, television actor Ashish Kapoor has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by a Delhi court. Kapoor, who faces serious charges of rape following a complaint from a 24-year-old woman, will remain in Tis Hazari Jail until further notice.

The complaint, filed on August 11, alleges that Kapoor drugged and raped the woman at a private party, where he and three others were present. The Delhi Police had sought a five-day remand for procedures including recovery of the victim’s phone and a potency test. While the victim initially named others in the alleged gang-rape, she later revised her statement, naming only Kapoor.
