Ladakh Protest: Ladakh social activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk on Wednesday ended his hunger strike after a massive violence broke out in Leh after protestors seeking full statehood clashed with the security forces. While urging the protestors to stop the violence, Wangchuk stated that these incidents will cause damage to their cause. The clash broke out after the young protestors torched the regional BJP office and also burnt a police vehicle. Earlier on Monday, the Leh Apex Body (LAB), an organisation that is leading the protest, stated that the protestors, especially the youths, are losing the patience.

The organisation clarified that a statehood will ensure protection of the unique identity of the tribals of this region. However, Wangchuk expressed frustration over the violence by stating that this will damage their cause. "My message of peaceful path failed today. I appeal to youth to please stop this nonsense. This only damages our cause," Wangchuk stated in his post on X (formerly Twitter).

Main reasons behind the protest:

- Full statehood for Ladakh
- To include Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the constitution
- Separate public service commission for the region
- Two parliamentary seats for Ladakh
- Employment opportunities for the youth of the region
- Demand of reservations for the locals in jobs

Earlier in 2024, Wangchuk stated that the BJP had promised to fulfill their demands in 2019; however, the centre has been postponing their demands for too long. He also stated that all their demands are as per the constitution and the government must fulfill them to restore the faith among the Ladakhis.

“We are not demanding anything beyond the framework of the Constitution. Our demand for the inclusion of Ladakh under the 6th Schedule, as outlined in Article 244 of the Constitution, is something the BJP has repeatedly promised in their manifestos,” said Wangchuk.
