In a major setback for former Bihar CM Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family, Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court on Friday framed charges against them based on a CBI chargesheet in the land for jobs case. Apart from the RJD supremo, the court framed charges against 40 accused, including his wife and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, son Tejashwi Yadav, and daughters Misa Bharti and Hema Yadav.

The court called it a criminal conspiracy by the accused and the misuse of the position to use public employment as a bargaining chip.

How was land for jobs scam organised?

The alleged scam started after 2004, when Lalu Yadav was the Railway Minister. CBI, in its chargesheet, has alleged that various appointments were made in several railway zones without any advertisement or following any established procedures.

The appointment letters were provided in exchange for land parcels, which were eventually transferred to Lalu Yadav's family or close aides. The lands were either transferred in gift deeds or underpriced sales.

The investigating agency has claimed that through several such deals, the Lalu family acquired more than one lakh square feet of land in Bihar for just Rs 26 lakh, whereas, as per the circle rate at that time, the value of these lands was around Rs 4.39 crore.

7 cases that form base in the case

The investigating agencies have mentioned seven major deals in the charge sheet, on the basis of which the structure of the entire scam comes to light.

1. Three people got jobs in exchange for Kishun Dev Rai's land.

2. Sanjay Rai, a resident of Mahuabagh, gave land for Rs 3.75 lakh, and two members of his family got jobs in the Railways.

3. Kiran Devi sold her land to Misa Bharti in 2007, and in 200,8 her son got selected inthe  Central Railway Mumbai.

4. Hazari Rai's land was sold to a private company, which later came under the control of Misa Bharti and Rabri Devi, while his nephews got jobs in the Railways.

5. Lal Babu Rai's son first got a job, and years later, the land was transferred to Rabri Devi's name.

6. A land worth Rs 62 lakh was transferred to Hema Yadav through a gift deed after a person got his job.

7. In another similar case, a land was transferred in the name of Hema Yadav, a few years after a person secured a job in the railways.
