Lucknow-based King George's Medical University (KGMU) has cancelled the admission of four MBBS students who couldn't pass the course over a period of 21-26 years despite being given 'several' opportunities. The decision was reportedly taken by the KGMU Executive Council.
The oldest among the said students gained admission at the university in 1997, while the other three were accepted into the institution in 1999, 2001 and 2006, as per media reports.
"The university cancelled admission of four students because they could not clear the examination for a long time," a spokesperson for the medical university was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
A source in the university dean's office cited by the news outlet said the disgraced students were granted "mercy attempts" and special classes were arranged for them. "The university has looked at all possible ways to help these students clear the examination," a university official stated.
It has been learnt that the four students were unable to obtain their degrees as they either failed or did not appear for the examination. Besides cancelling the admissions of the supposedly middle-aged students, the university administration also formed a panel to look into the academic performance of 37 other MBBS students who have been unable to complete the course for more than 10 years.
"It has been decided to run special classes for these 37 students. If they still cannot not clear the examination, the next course of action would be taken against them. The newly formed committee will look into their performances," added the official.
The National Medical Council (NMC) issued the Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023 (GEMR-2023) on June 2 this year, requiring students pursuing MBBS to complete the course within nine years. The regulations, the initial version of which was revised once later that month, also stipulated a maximum of four attempts to clear the first year. However, on June 23, 2023, the NMC withdrew the GEMR-2023 with immediate effect.
