The body of an unidentified man was found inside a blue drum in Ludhiana’s Sherpur area, reminiscent of the Meerut drum murder case earlier this year, where a Merchant Navy officer was discovered cemented inside a similar blue drum. The grim discovery was made on Wednesday morning when ragpickers noticed a strong, foul smell coming from an abandoned drum in a vacant plot.
After being alerted, the Division Number 6 police quickly arrived at the scene. Inspector Kulwant Kaur, the Station House Officer (SHO), confirmed that the body, thought to be of a man around 40 years old, was wrapped in a bedsheet, covered with a plastic gunny sack, and stuffed inside the drum, with his neck and legs tightly bound with rope. The body was already in an advanced state of decomposition, indicating that the murder likely occurred at least two days earlier.
“The police took out the gunny bag from the drum from which the dead body of a man who seemed to be around 40 years old, was found wrapped in a bedsheet, with his limbs tied up with a piece of rope. The body has started decomposing and therefore it is suspected the man had died at least two days ago” SHO said.
Investigators have compiled a list of 42 drum manufacturing units in the city, fueling suspicions that the drum was recently purchased specifically for disposing of the body. The police have registered a murder case against unknown individuals and launched an investigation to identify both the victim and the perpetrators.
Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas to track any movement related to the dumping of the drum. They are also examining missing persons reports filed in Ludhiana and neighboring districts over the past week to help establish the victim’s identity.
Authorities believe the careful way the body was wrapped and concealed suggests the crime was premeditated and carried out by someone familiar with the area. A murder case has been registered against unknown suspects, and an investigation has been launched to identify both the victim and the accused.
