Senior Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra’s car was allegedly attacked with eggs by residents at Ariadaha on Saturday night. The incident is being seen as part of a wider pattern of post-election protests confronting several TMC leaders across West Bengal.
Though Madan Mitra stated he was not in the car when the incident took place and alleged it was the work of "BJP-backed goons", locals insisted the public ire was due to their long-pending grievances. There are also reports that the MLA's driver was thrashed amid the chaos.

What sparked the protests?
Sources said that the protest, which, according to residents, started outside the house of a councillor from Ward 14, saw auto and e-rickshaw drivers and residents congregate there asking for the return of money that, they claimed, had been extorted as "cut money" over the years.
The locals allege that local TMC workers were engaged in these illegal collections and demanded action. The protest then gained momentum, resulting in the alleged throwing of eggs.
The Kamarhati episode is not an isolated case. Since the Assembly elections, several TMC leaders have encountered public demonstrations, slogan-shouting and confrontational protests in different parts of the state.
Abhishek Banerjee recently faced protests during a visit to Sonarpur, while demonstrations have also been witnessed outside police stations and court premises during proceedings involving TMC leaders accused of corruption, extortion and other offences.

Why Eggs Have Become a Symbol
Over the past few weeks, a new symbolic gesture by protesters against political leaders accused of various scams has been the eggs. This is one of the latest incidents that demonstrate the struggle of the TMC, as public angst finds expression in the streets and through such acts.
