A 40-year-old man was arrested in the Guna district of Madhya Pradesh for raping a 10-year-old girl. Mukesh Jatav, the accused, was detained following a brief encounter on Sunday. Jatav, who was on the run, opened fire on police officers during the encounter, according to police sources cited by Times Now. Police retaliated against Jatav in self-defense, wounding him.
Jatav reportedly approached the girl and her mother on November 6 when they were returning home after selling maise and purchasing wheat flour.
He informed the mother that the store had shortchanged her by Rs 100 and promised to refund the money. According to The Times of India, Jatav persuaded her to send her daughter to get it and then took the minor with him.
The girl was later found unconscious in the surrounding neighborhood. Her identity has been kept hidden in order to protect her privacy.
Police are presently conducting more investigations.
