A 21-year-old woman from Narayanganj in Madhya Pradesh's Mandla district died shortly after delivering her baby at Jabalpur Medical College, becoming the fourth Covid-19 fatality in the state within just over a week. The incident has raised concerns within the health department, especially following similar deaths reported recently in Indore, Ratlam, and Khargone.
According to Chief Medical and Health Officer Sanjay Mishra, the woman had been admitted for a caesarean section. Post-surgery, her oxygen levels dropped, prompting her transfer to the ICU. After she tested positive for Covid-19, she was moved to the Medicine ICU for isolation, where she eventually passed away. Mishra said the patient had a history of respiratory issues for the last three years, which may have worsened her condition as per a News18 report.
In Jabalpur, health authorities have conducted 79 Covid-19 tests so far, out of which three cases tested positive. One of the patients was an 80-year-old man from Katni, admitted for cardiac treatment, who has now fully recovered. Another case involved a 32-year-old man from Madan Mahal, who was discharged after five days of treatment. The third case was the deceased woman from Narayanganj.
Across Madhya Pradesh, there are currently nearly 200 confirmed Covid-19 cases, including 134 active cases and four recent deaths. The rise in cases comes amid the detection of new Covid-19 variants in the country. As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), four new strains LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1 have been identified in India. Among them, JN.1 has emerged as the dominant strain, found in more than half the samples, and is reportedly linked to reduced immunity and increased vulnerability to infection.
Health officials are urging the public to remain cautious, especially among vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those with existing health conditions.
