Tensions flared at the Thiruparankundram hill outside Madurai city as Hindu activists clashed with the police as they attempted to trespass on a police cordon and force their way to the summit on Wednesday, December 3. The activists were trying to light the Karthigai Deepam (lamp) at the ‘Deepothoon’, a pillar located next to a Sufi dargah atop the hill.
Local police stopped the protestors from reaching the hilltop. In the scuffle that happened between the two sides, four policemen were injured as the mob raised provocative slogans, targeting the DMK-led state government. Subsequently, Madurai District Collector, KJ Praveenkumar, immediately imposed a curfew in the area under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
HC Asks Petitioner To Light Lamp At Thirupparankundram
Earlier on Wednesday, December 3, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directed the petitioner to light the lamp atop the hill with CISF protection. Following a plea, the court directed the CISF commandant attached to the HC Bench to deploy sufficient personnel to assist the petitioner, who has been permitted to take 10 others to ensure the implementation of the order.
However, petitioners who had come to the site following the court order and with CISF protection were stopped by the local police, which boiled down to violent clashes. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP Chief, K Annamalai, attacked both the state government and the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department for not respecting the religious sentiments of the Hindus.

“The DMK Govt’s hostility toward Sanatan Dharma is no longer a matter of interpretation; it is a fact. By deploying hundreds of police personnel and physically preventing devotees from performing the religious ritual, the DMK regime has exposed the full extent of its appeasement politics. DMK must answer why Sanatan Dharma is singled out, time and again. Do court orders mean nothing to this govt?" he added.
BJP National spokesperson, Shehzad Poonawala, also slammed the state government and said, quoted News18, "HC CLEARS, BUT COPS BLOCK." He further said that the clash was a result of the Hindus being blocked by the TN police from reaching the hilltop. He further highlighted the court order, which gave the devotees the right to light the lamp.
