Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is set to move his office from Mantralaya, the state secretariat in Mumbai, to the iconic Air India building at Nariman Point. The move comes as the state government faces a shortage of office space in the prime South Mumbai area and aims to consolidate departments under one roof.

Maharashtra CM’s Office Set To Move From Mantralaya

According to Jagran.com report, the Maharashtra government acquired the 23-storey sea-facing commercial tower for Rs 1,601 crore last month. Built in 1974 on reclaimed land owned by the state government, the Air India building was once a landmark in Mumbai and attracted visitors for its architecture and unique features.

After Air India was privatised and acquired by the Tata Group, the building, along with other non-core assets, was transferred to Air India Assets Holding Limited (AIAHL). The state government later took ownership of the property to develop it as a government administrative complex.

Office Space Shortage At Mantralaya

Mantralaya, which was built in 1955, has been struggling with a severe shortage of space. Due to this, the Maharashtra government has been forced to rent around nine lakh square feet of office space in nearby areas. The shifting of the Chief Minister’s Office and other government departments currently operating outside Mantralaya is expected to reduce rental expenses and save the government around Rs 200 crore.

CM Office To Be Located On Top Floor

The Chief Minister’s Office will be set up on the top floor of the Air India building, while the cabinet hall will be located on the 22nd floor across an area of 13,363 square feet. As per reports, a review meeting on the redevelopment and shifting plan is expected to be held in the presence of the Chief Secretary.

Building To Become Model Government Complex

Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Shivendra Singh Bhosale said the transfer of the Air India building to the state government was an important milestone in strengthening the state’s administrative infrastructure. He said the building would be developed as a model government complex with a focus on quality, sustainability, and convenience for citizens.
