Maharashtra: Five persons, including a woman and her four children drowned in a waterfall near the backwater of Bhushi Dam in Pune's Lonavala area on Sunday, according to a police official. Three bodies have been recovered till now and search operations have been halted for the day for the two missing individuals, Pune Rural Police informed.

“A woman and four children drowned in a waterfall near Bhushi dam in Lonavala. Two bodies have been recovered. Search and rescue operations underway. All five people are from one family belonging to Pune Sayyed Nagar,” Pune SP Pankaj Deshmukh said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Pune city till July 1, predicting light to moderate rainfall. This comes after a period of reduced monsoon activity following heavy rainfall earlier in June.

From June 1 to 8, Pune experienced varying intensities of rain, but there has been a significant drop in precipitation since then. Weather experts attribute this lull to a weakened monsoon branch over the Arabian Sea. However, there was a brief revival of the monsoon around June 21.

Pune Weekly Weather Forecast

Pune's weather forecast predicts generally cloudy skies with moderate rain from June 28 to July 2, with temperatures ranging from 21 degrees Celsius to 29 degrees Celsius. On July 3 and 4, the city will continue to experience rain, with temperatures around 22 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius. Residents are advised to prepare for consistent rainfall throughout this period.

Despite an orange alert for June 25 and 26, Pune received minimal rainfall, while the nearby ghat areas saw increased rainfall over the past 48 hours. The city itself has remained mostly dry for the past two weeks.

IMD's yellow alert serves as a warning to residents and authorities to prepare for expected rainfall, as moderate rains could impact daily activities and local infrastructure. Residents are encouraged to stay informed with weather updates and follow safety guidelines during this period.
