In a shocking incident, a 36-year-old football coach allegedly raped and blackmailed a minor for three years in Maharashtra's Palghar area. The accused, identified as Abhijeet Mendal, has been charged under various sections relating to rape, criminal intimidation, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

How Did It Start?

The 17-year-old girl stated that she joined the academy in 2023, where Mendal worked as a coach. She alleged that the accused first gained her trust and convinced her that if she accepted his demands, he would provide major opportunities to excel in her football career. In these years, he raped her multiple times.

The accused also made some objectionable videos of the minor; when she tried to distance herself from the coach, he blackmailed her. The situation remained the same for three years. The accused also made some objectionable videos of the minobout the entire incident. Following this, the police arrested Mendal after a preliminary inquiry.

Similar Incident

In a separate case, the Jharkhand government has removed a member of the India U-18 men’s coaching staff on grounds of absenteeism and harassment. The staff member has been identified as Sudhir Golla from the Eklavya Hockey Training Centre in Ranchi and has been removed after an order was issued by the director, Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, on May 11.

Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh confirmed the decision. "He was laid off two days back," India Today, quoted Singh as saying. The order noted that Golla was absent from the training centre for two weeks without informing the authorities. It disrupted training activities. The institution has assigned Karuna Purti, a coach in a government-run school, to replace him. There have been past incidents where Golla behaved inappropriately with girls; several verbal complaints were also received agains
