Maharashtra: Ramesh Mhatre, the Shinde Sena corporator accused of assaulting a female doctor inside a hospital in Dombivli, has claimed that he did not hit the female doctor, reported NDTV. He further claimed that his action saved two lives and accused the doctors of mishandling the patient. Mhatre also stated that he was fighting for the justice, what Sena founder Bal Thackeray had taught him.

The Maharashtra police have arrested three accused in the matter and have assured that the Sena corporator will also be arrested soon. A huge row erupted in Maharashtra on Tuesday after Mhatre, along with his supporters, entered the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) Hospital and assaulted the staff members for over three minutes.

Doctors Launch Strike 

The incident was heavily criticized by the doctors and nurses in the government hospitals and health centres across the state. While demanding a strict action in the matter, the medical body on Tuesday launched an indefinite strike and suspended OPD services across government healthcare facilities. The strike has forced the patients to either wait for the situation to get normal or visit the private hospitals, reported India Today.

While speaking on the issue, KDMC Commissioner Abhinay Goyal stated that an FIR has been lodged against Mhatre and his supporters for allegedly assaulting a female doctor and staff members while they were on duty. The hospital officials stated that the matter escalated over non-availability of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) beds.

Mhatre Assaults Doctor, Staff Members 

They further stated that Mhatre and his supporters began assaulting the staff members when the family was informed that the pregnant woman would be shifted to another hospital if NICU beds were required. In the viral video, the woman doctor is also seen trying to use her phone, possibly to contact someone for help.

However, Mhatre's supporters tried to snatch her phone, and later the corporator hit her with such force that the phone fell on the ground. While reacting to the incident, the United Doctors Front stated that the attack was not on only a single doctor but on the whole system.

"Assault was not on one doctor but on the entire healthcare system and every citizen who depends on it," the organization said. It further demanded a strong action against the corporator and his supporters.
