Major Ashish Dhonchak, who gave the supreme sacrifice for the country in a gunfight with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag on Wednesday, was supposed to come home next month on October 23 to attend a housewarming ceremony. It was also his birthday on the same day as he was about to turn 42 years old, but destiny had some other plans for the braveheart.

Notably, three security personnel - Colonel Manpreet Singh, Commanding Officer of 19 Rashtriya Rifles, Major Ashish Dhonchak and Deputy Superintendent of Police Humayun Bhat - were killed during an encounter with terrorists in the Kokernag area of Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday morning.

Left behind wife, 2-year-old daughter, and three sisters

Major Ashish Dhonchak had attended his brother-in-law's wedding in Jind in May and returned to duty the same month. Since then, he was on duty and never visited his home. Major Ashish originally hailed from Binjhol village in Panipat, Haryana. He had taken a leave for the housewarming ceremony of his family’s new house, which is being constructed in TDI.

Major Ashish left behind a family of four, including his father, Lalchand, a retired employee of the National Fertilisers Limited; mother, Kamla, a homemaker; a three-year-old daughter named Vamika, and his wife Jyoti.

The martyrdom of their only brother just two weeks after Raksha Bandhan left three sisters, Anju, Suman and Mamta, grief-stricken. Born on October 23, 1987, 41-year-old Major Dhonchak joined the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment in the Indian Army in 2012.

He was also awarded the Sena Medal last year for his exemplary services to the nation. The martyrdom of the Major has left the whole region grieving as scores of people turned up at the residence of the braveheart to pay their homage.

Tributes have also flowed in from around the nation, with Haryana CM ML Khattar, the Indian army, and Chinar Corps, among others, posting condolence messages on X (Formerly Twitter).
