Congress president and Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a special session of both Houses of the Parliament over the Pahalgam terror attack.

In his letter to the PM, Kharge said, “At this moment, when unity and solidarity is essential, Opposition believes that it is important to convene a special session of both the houses of Parliament at the earliest."

He further added that it would be a powerful demonstration of collective resolve. Kharge added, “This will be a powerful demonstration of our collective resolve and will to deal with the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam on innocent citizens on 22 April 2025. It is our hope that the session will be accordingly convened.”

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi said that it is a crucial time show that India remains united. He said, "The terrorist attack in Pahalgam has outraged every Indian. At this critical time, India must show that we will always stand together against terrorism."

"The Opposition believes that a special session of both Houses of Parliament should be convened, where the representatives of the people can show their unity and determination. We request that such a special session be convened at the earliest," he added.

Earlier on Monday, a special session of the Jammu and Kashmir was convened where a resolution condemning the Pahalgam terrorist attack was passed. The Assembly started with observing a two-minute silence to pay homage to the 26 civilians died in the attack.

On the diplomatic front, Indian has retaliated by holding the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) in abeyance, revoking visas of all categories except long-term and diplomatic ones. The military, on the other hand, launched a crackdown on the terrorists in the valley. So far, at least 10 houses of terrorists have been razed to the ground.

Moreover, Pakistani nationals, on short-term visas, were directed to leave the country. In an escalatory spiral measure, Pakistan also held all bilateral agreements in abeyance, including the 1972 Shimla Agreement. It also banned trade with India and closed its airspace for the Indian aviation industry.
