Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday accused the BJP of disrupting her party’s protest march in Kolkata. The march was held over the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Baruipur. Banerjee alleged that police failed to ensure the implementation of the Calcutta High Court’s permission for the rally and acted in favour of the BJP.
Mamata Accuses BJP Workers
Addressing supporters at Hazra Crossing after the protest march ended, Banerjee alleged that BJP workers blocked the rally at several points and attacked TMC workers. “The high court allowed our rally, but BJP goons stopped it. How can the police undermine the court's order allowing the rally? BJP goons beat up our party workers. Is this democracy?” news agency PTI quoted her as saying.
Clashes Break Out Between BJP And TMC Workers
The protest march was organised by TMC youth workers after receiving permission from the Calcutta High Court. During the march, clashes broke out between BJP workers and TMC youth workers. Police used batons to control the situation. According to reports, BJP supporters raised "thief" slogans and tried to block the route by forming human barricades. Eggs were also allegedly thrown during the rally.

Mamata Targets Police
The TMC chief further accused the police of not acting fairly and claimed that the force was being used against her party workers. "The police cannot provide protection to common people and are being used to sabotage our programme," she claimed. She stated that the police had become "an arm of the BJP organisation". Banerjee also questioned why police did not provide protection despite the court’s permission for the protest march.
"Ram ka naam badnaam na karo. When High Court has given the permission, how do you allow the police? I am not blaming the BJP. I am blaming the police, the administration. You should have taken the moral responsibility so that peacefully we should have done the rally. But instead of that, what you have done? You allowed BJP people to set up 10 stage, dias, microphone. You smashed our hand mic, though High Court has given the permission for hand mic and have beaten our workers,” she said.

“If it is going on, where is the law? Totally lawlessness is going on. Even it is more than UP... When police knows there is a high court order, how they violate the high court order, it will be contempt of court. They are not able to give protection for peaceful people. Only they are doing the atrocities on our workers. We condemn it,” Banerjee added.
Mamata Slaps Party Worker
Meanwhile, videos have emerged online showing Mamata Banerjee appearing to slap a party worker on the cheek and two others on the back while taking her party members away from the spot. The reason behind the incident is not clear. It is also not confirmed whether the people were party workers, as claimed in social media posts.
