West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lashed out at the central government at a Trinamool Congress rally in Cooch Behar on Tuesday after the latter ordered resumption of MGNREGA in the state with "immediate effect". The move comes ahead of elections and almost three years after the Centre suspended implementation of the rural job scheme in the state.

Banerjee tore up the MGNREGA document while addressing the gathering, calling it “valueless and insulting". Targeting the BJP-led central government, she rejected the directive and termed it "Delhi’s charity".

“Where is the time to show it? This is December, and the election is due early next year. Then they said training has to be provided," Banerjee told the gathering.

She then tore the document and said, “When will you train and when will you give the jobs? I say this piece of paper is valueless… We don’t want your mercy. I feel it is disrespectful."

Banerjee said the document put "absurd and restrictive" conditions on workers. She further alleged that it was BJP’s tactics to weaken the state ahead of elections scheduled for next year.
