Himachal Pradesh is reeling under a severe crisis triggered by landslides and cloudbursts due to incessant rains. The incidents related to the downpour have severely impacted lives and livelihoods.
The Manali-Leh National Highway (NH-3) has been blocked due to a landslide near the first snow gallery in Solang Valley on Thursday. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working to clear the debris and restore traffic.
Vehicles on this route are being diverted via Rohtang Pass.
The Beas River has been flooded in Mandi due to heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for more showers in Himachal Pradesh.
Torrential rains on Tuesday led to flash floods that swept away 14 bridges, 148 houses and two shops. As many as 30 people have so far lost their lives in monsoon-related incidents, as per ANI. Most of these fatalities have been reported in the Mandi district. Many people are missing and the rescue teams are working round the clock to find them.
"The monsoon entered Himachal Pradesh on June 19, and since then, continuous rainfall has been recorded. Heavy rainfall on June 29 and 30 caused widespread damage. The death toll due to rain-related incidents has reached nearly 30 so far. As per current data, 34 people are reported missing, with the worst-hit area being Mandi district, where 10 deaths occurred over just two days," ANI quoted DC Rana, Special Secretary of the Himachal Pradesh Revenue Department and Disaster Management, as saying.
Amid monsoon fury, Himachal PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh announced the state government had formed a high-level committee to monitor and investigate all ongoing NHAI projects, especially related to the ongoing cutting work for four-lane highway projects.
Singh also said safety audits of such projects would be conducted by IIT Roorkee.
