Manipur Encounter: In a major success, the security forces killed at least four militants, belonging to a banned outfit, in Manipur's Churachandpur district on Tuesday morning. Four militants have been killed in an encounter with security forces, said police, adding that based on inputs about the presence of armed cadres belonging to the proscribed United Kuki National Army (UKNA), an operation was launched around 5.30 am at Khanpi village under Henglep sub-division in the district, which led to a deadly gunfight.

The state police, in a statement, said the operation is still in progress, and a search in the adjoining areas is underway. During the operation, a fierce gunfight broke out between army personnel and the militants, the officer said.

"At least four militants were killed during the exchange of fire while several others managed to flee the spot," the officer said, adding that the identities of the deceased are yet to be established.

In the early hours of November 4, terrorists resorted to unprovoked firing on the Army column during an intelligence-based operation at Khanpi village, approximately 80 km west of Churachandpur, the statement read.

In the ensuing firefight between security forces and armed cadres of UKNA, a non-SOO insurgent group, "four cadres of the terrorist group were neutralised", it said.

United Kuki National Army (UKNA), which is not a signatory to the Suspension of Operations pact signed between the Centre, the state government and the Kuki and Zomi militant groups, continued its anti-government activities in the crisis-hit northeastern state.

8 Militants Arrested In Manipur

Earlier, on November 2, the security forces arrested eight militants belonging to various proscribed outfits in Manipur. Three active cadres of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (Taibanganba) were arrested from Khongjom Bazar in Thoubal district, while another member of the outfit was apprehended from Pureiromba in Imphal East.

Two members of the proscribed United National Liberation Front (P) were also arrested from Chongtham Kona area in Thoubal district, a police officer said. The security forces also apprehended two active cadres of the KCP (PWG) from Wahengbam Leikai area in Imphal West, he said. Arms and ammunition, including rifles, grenades, cartridges and pistols, were seized from their possession, the officer said. The UNLF (P) had signed a peace pact with the Centre in 2023.
