Manipur: Suspected militants launched a fresh attack in Manipur's Imphal West district in the early hours of Wednesday, police said. The militants from their hill positions in Kangpokpi district fired multiple rounds from sophisticated arms and hurled bombs at the low-lying Kadangband area in Imphal West district around 1 am, a police officer said.
Village volunteers deployed in the area returned the fire even as additional security forces were rushed to the area to control the situation. No injuries were reported in the firing, the police said, as quoted by news agency PTI.The attack forced several villagers living in Kutcha homes to flee to safer places, they said.
Kadangband area has witnessed several attacks by suspected militants since violence broke out in the state in May 2023.
Earlier on December 27, Manipur Policebhad stated that some of the armed men from the hilly region had launched gun-and-bomb attacks in two villages in the state's Imphal East district, creating panic among locals and the authorities. However, no one suffered any injury in these attacks in Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi villages, a senior official was quoted as saying by PTI.
The police official further informed that the security forces deployed in the region retaliated, resulting in a fierce exchange of fire in the two villages. "Armed men from the hilltop started firing indiscriminately and hurling bombs around 10.45 am in Sanasabi village and adjacent areas, forcing security personnel to retaliate," the officer informed. He further stated that locals were seen running helter-skelter as the gunfight between the armed men and security personnel broke out.
"Armed men also launched attacks in Thamnapokpi village in the district around 11.30 am, creating panic among residents there," the officer said.
