Manipur Violence: The Union Home Ministry on Monday announced that it will soon initiate talks with both the Kuki and Meitei ethnic groups to put an end to the Manipur violence, continuing since May 3, 2023. This announcement came as Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting to review the security situation in the state on Monday in Delhi. The meeting witnessed the presence of key officials, including Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Intelligence Bureau Chief Tapan Deka, Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Army Chief (Designate) Lt General Upendra Dwivedi, GoC Three Corps HS Sahi, Security Advisor to Manipur Kuldiep Singh, Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi, Manipur DGP Rajiv Singh, and Assam Rifles DG Pradeep Chandran Nair.
After a comprehensive review of the security situation in the violence-ridden state, the Union Home Minister directed that no further incidents of violence take place in Manipur.
Here are the five important takeaways from the meeting:
1. The minister directed an increase in Central forces deployment in Manipur, if required, and ordered the strategic deployment of Central forces to restore peace and tranquillity in the state. He further directed that strict action be taken as per the law against the perpetrators of violence, the MHA release stated.
2. HM Amit Shah also reviewed the situation in relief camps, especially concerning the proper availability of food, water, medicines, and other basic amenities.
3. He also directed the Chief Secretary of Manipur to ensure proper health and education facilities for the displaced people and their rehabilitation, the MHA said.
4. The Union HM underscored the importance of a coordinated approach to resolve the ongoing ethnic conflict. He said that the Ministry of Home Affairs will talk to both groups, Meiteis and Kukis, to bridge the ethnic divide at the earliest. He noted that the Central government has been actively supporting the Manipur Government in strengthening the security situation in the state, the MHA stated.
5. The Union HM said that the Government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens of Manipur.
