Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday passed an eight-point resolution during a meeting with a section of NDA MLAs, in response to the ongoing unrest in the state. The lawmakers urged the Centre to review the imposition of AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) in six police station areas of the valley.

This comes days after a recent series of killings in the strife-hit northeastern state, which has remained tense since ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities erupted last year.

During the three-hour meeting, the MLAs called for a decisive operation against Kuki militants, who were responsible for the abduction and killing of six Meitei women and children from Jiribam. They also demanded that the group be declared an "unlawful organisation" within seven days.

However, the proposals were rejected by Meitei civil society organisations, who asserted that the people of Manipur were not satisfied with the resolution.

"The people of Manipur are not satisfied with the resolutions. They have resolved to start mass operations against Kuki militants responsible for the killing of six innocent women and children in Jiribam. But we have been telling that the crime has happened not just in Jiribam but in several other places of Manipur since May 2023. People of Manipur have demanded the state government and the legislators to fix responsibility on all SoO groups and carry out operations against them," NDTV quoted Khuraijam Athouba, spokesperson for Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, an umbrella body of Meitei outfits, as saying.

On November, 11 six people including women and children were tragically killed in Jiribam, escalating the already tense atmosphere. These killings have sparked widespread outrage in the valley, putting pressure on the state’s BJP-led government and CM N Biren Singh.

In the wake of this, Chief Minister Singh led a meeting of 38 NDA legislators. However, 27 of them chose not to attend, citing no reasons for their absence.

Earlier this week, a similar resolution was passed by a section of the ruling MLAs, urging the central government to review the imposition of AFSPA in six police station areas of the valley. This came shortly after the Centre decided to send 70 additional paramilitary companies to Manipur to help control the escalating violence.

On 14 November, the central government re-imposed AFSPA in parts of the state, including Jiribam, after a recent surge in violent incidents. Among these, the most disturbing was the abduction and killing of six Meitei women and children by suspected Hmar militants, which has further fuelled anger across the state.

As the Manipur crisis deepens, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is now reviewing the security situation in Manipur, directing officials to focus on restoring peace and order as quickly as possible, recognising the urgency of the situation. The situation remains highly unstable in the northeastern state.
