Manipur violence: A total curfew has been imposed in with immediate effect and restriction of movement of the general public outside their residences in all areas of Imphal West District, said the Manipur government in an official statement on Thursday.

"Movement of persons belonging to essential services such as health, electricity, PHED, petrol pumps, schools/colleges, and municipality. Press and electronic media, functioning of courts, and to and fro movement of flight passengers to the airport shall be exempted from the imposition of curfew," the official statement added.

As many as 17 people were injured in clashes in the violence-hit state after the Army and RAF personnel fired tear gas shells at Kangvai and Phougakchao area in Bishnupur district on Thursday.

A planned mass burial of Kuki-Zomi people killed in Manipur's ethnic conflict was halted on Thursday morning after the state's High Court ordered the status quo to be preserved at the scheduled burial location in Churachandpur district, hours before the clash broke out.

Tension has been building in the Bishnupur district since the morning when thousands of residents took to the streets to impede the movement of security troops.

Locals led by women tried to pass the barricade put up by the Army and RAF personnel, demanding that they be allowed to go to Tuibuong, the burial site.

Meanwhile, Opposition parties belonging to I.N.D.I.A have been protesting over their demand since the start of the monsoon session of Parliament for a detailed debate on the Manipur situation and a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
