A fresh unrest erupted in strife-hit Manipur after the arrest of Meitei outfit, Arambai Tenggol, leader Kanan Singh on Saturday. An infuriated crowd rampaged across the streets in Imphal, prompting the authorities to enforce curfew and internet curbs.

The districts that will face an Internet outage include Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur. Besides, a curfew has been imposed in the Bishnupur district, while orders restricting the movement of five or more people have been issued in the remaining four districts.

- The CBI said Kanan Singh was arrested at Imphal Airport for his involvement in several criminal activities amid Manipur violence in 2023. The federal probe agency said Singh’s family was apprised about the development and he was taken to Guwahati, ANI reported. He will be presented before the court for police remand

- 25 MLAs and one MP of Manipur met the state Governor, Ajay Bhalla, to discuss the violence that erupted last night over Kanan Singh’s arrest

- Congress MLA Okram Surjakumar alleged that five youths of the outfit, Arambai Tenggol, were arrested, which created unrest in the state. He said the lawmakers met with the governor and requested that the government should specify a reason for arresting the youths

- BJP MLA Kh Ibomcha said the lawmakers urged Governor Bhalla to release the arrested Arambai Tenggol leaders. He said the governor expressed that Kanan Singh was arrested in a CIB case while four others were accompanying him when he was nabbed, for which they were apprehended too. He said the four individuals will be released after their verification by the state police

- A group of angry youths poured petrol on their heads in public and threatened to set themselves on fire over the arrest of Arambai Tenggol leaders. They alleged that they had given up arms and participated in relief work during the recent floods, but now the government and security forces are targeting them

- The Congress on Sunday rebuked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his "insensitivity" to the suffering of people in Manipur

- Security has been heightened across five states in Manipur to prevent any untoward incident

- Arambai Tenggol leader Kanan Singh, who was serving as a head constable in the state police commando unit, has been identified as the prime suspect in the February 2024 assault on the residence of Additional Superintendent of Police Moirangthem Amit, which also involved a subsequent abduction, News 18 reported.
