The Manipur Government on Tuesday shut down all schools in the state till Friday in view of the prevailing law and order situation in the state. The government has also reimposed the ban on the internet after protests were held in the state against the killing of two youths who were allegedly kidnapped in July. Due to the unrest in the state, security personnel have been put on alert and additional measures are being taken to prevent any untoward incident.
Ethnic violence has been raging in Manipur since the beginning of May. Over 175 people have lost their lives and hundreds more have been wounded in the conflict that erupted in the northeastern state on May 3. The trigger was a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ held in the hill districts to oppose the demand of the dominant Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe status.

The state government announced that all government and private schools will be shut down till Friday. The closure of schools in the state is a precautionary measure in light of the law and order situation in the state, the official order read.
The government also reimposed the ban on the internet after protests were held in the state against the killing of two youths who were allegedly kidnapped in July. The mobile internet services in the state are suspended for five days, officials said. The curbs will remain effective in the state till 7.45 pm on October 1.
About 45 students were injured after police fired tear gas shells and baton-charged the mob protesting in the Imphal valley. The students of Imphal-based schools and colleges brought out the protest rallies hours after photos of the bodies of the two youths went viral on social media while demanding the arrest of those involved in the killing.
The Manipur government has asked people to exercise restraint and allow authorities to investigate the "kidnapping and killing" of them. In a statement issued by the secretariat of Chief Minister N Biren Singh late on Monday night, the state government said the case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
A team of CBI officials, led by the agency's Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar, will reach Imphal in a special flight on Wednesday to investigate the "kidnapping and killing" of two students who went missing in the northeastern state on July 6.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra targeted the BJP-led central government over its inaction on the Manipur violence, saying the horrific crimes are allowed to continue unabated.
The Supreme Court on Monday ordered the Deputy Director General of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Guwahati and the Home Secretary of Manipur to ensure that the displaced persons in the ethnic strife-torn State, who may have lost their Aadhaar cards, are provided a copy of the card after due verification.
In a post on microblogging site X, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said "In light of the distressing news that emerged yesterday regarding the tragic demise of the missing students, I want to assure the people of the state that both the state and central government are closely working together to nab the perpetrators."
The Congress accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being only interested in “latching onto” power and questioned why he has not visited the violence-hit state of Manipur yet. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh wrote on X, "The Prime Minister is roaming around different states leaving behind his trademark trail of lies, abuses and insults."
