Manipur witnessed fresh violence on Saturday after police arrested Kanan Singh, a prominent leader of a Meitei group, Arambai Tenggol. A group of angry youths poured petrol on their heads in public and threatened to set themselves on fire.

The video of the youths, wearing black t-shirts and holding petrol bottles, is getting viral across social media. The protesters alleged that they had given up arms and participated in relief work during the recent floods, but now the government and security forces are targeting them.

“We have given up arms. We have done what you're supposed to do during the floods. Now you're arresting us. We will kill ourselves,” one of them could be heard saying.

Internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN services, were suspended in five districts of Manipur after the incidents of arson and vandalism in Imphal on Saturday. The members of the Meitei volunteer group went on a rampage across the state capital. They shouted slogans seeking their leader’s release.

The Internet outage took effect from 11:45 PM on June 7 and will remain in place for the next five days. The districts which will face Internet outage include Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur. Besides, a curfew has been imposed in the Bishnupur district, while orders restricting the movement of five or more people have been issued in the remaining four districts.

Arambai Tenggol leader Kanan Singh, who was serving as a head constable in the state police commando unit, has been identified as the prime suspect in the February 2024 assault on the residence of Additional Superintendent of Police Moirangthem Amit, which also involved a subsequent abduction, News 18 reported. Following the incident, Kanan was suspended from duty for alleged dereliction of responsibilities.
