The ongoing violence in Manipur will be discussed in the Parliament during the Monsoon Session which begins on Thursday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi told the media. The decision was reached at the all-party parliamentary meeting convened by the BJP-led government on Wednesday. "A meeting of all party floor leaders was called. 34 parties and 44 leaders attended the meeting. We received important suggestions. Govt has 31 legislative listed items...All the parties want a discussion on Manipur and the Government is ready to discuss it," said Joshi.
Earlier in the day, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that his party will raise issues including the Manipur situation, assault on the federal structure and others in the upcoming session. Meanwhile, a five-member delegation of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) reached Manipur to meet the affected people.
Violence broke out between Manipur's Kuki and Meitei communities in May. The conflict has claimed at least 142 lives so far. The ethnic clashes erupted following a contentious verdict by the Manipur High Court regarding the grant of Scheduled Tribe status to Meiteis. As of July 4, approximately 54,488 people were internally displaced due to arson and rioting in the state, according to a status report submitted by the Manipur government to the Supreme Court.
The Army been deployed to restore law & order in the state. The internet services in Manipur have been suspended since May 3 when the violence broke out.
The opposition has accused the Centre of failing to contain the violence in the BJP-ruled state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired an all-party meeting last month to discuss the situation in the northeast state days after visiting the state in a bid to seek ways to restore peace.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh purportedly backtracked on his decision to resign from his post in the aftermath of the onset of violence.
