Manish Sisodia Bail: The Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of former Delhi deputy chief minister and AAP leader Manish Sisodia, who has been lodged in jail for over a year in connection with the money laundering probe linked to the Delhi Excise Policy scam. Sisodia's judicial custody, which ended today, has been extended till May 31.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court will also pronounce its verdict today on the bail pleas of Manish Sisodia in both money laundering and corruption cases lodged against him by the ED and CBI, respectively, in connection with the Delhi Liquor Policy case. The Delhi High Court on May 14 reserved its verdict on the pleas after concluding the arguments from AAP, ED and CBI. The order is likely to be pronounced today at around 5 pm by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, as per the cause list uploaded on the high court’s website.
Last week, ED named the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as an accused as it filed a money laundering charge sheet against Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case. The ED and CBI have opposed releasing Manish Sisodia on bail, claiming concerted efforts by the accused to delay the process of framing charges.
Three bigwigs of the Aam Aadmi Party including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and the party's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh have been arrested by the ED or CBI in cases related to the Delhi Excise Policy Scam. While Sanjay Singh and Arvind Kejriwal have been granted bail by the Supreme Court, Manish Sisodia continues to be in jail since February 2023.
Sanjay Singh was granted bail by the Supreme Court in April this year after ED made a tactical withdrawal and told the three-judge Bench led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna that it had decided to concede in favour of granting bail to Sanjay Singh, whose custody was no longer necessary. The withdrawal came after the apex court pointed out that Sanjay Singh had been behind bars for six months with no headway made in recovering the proceeds of the alleged crime or any trace of the money trail leading to him.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on May 10 was also granted interim bail till June 1 by the Supreme Court to campaign for the ongoing Lok Sabha Election 2024. Kejriwal was arrested by the ED in March this year in connection with the Delhi Liquor policy case. Kejriwal challenged his arrest in the Supreme Court, which granted him interim bail with conditions that he won't be attending his CM Office and won't be signing official documents.
