The call for conferring the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, on former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has gained significant momentum after the Telangana Assembly passed a resolution urging the central government to bestow the honour upon him. Several Congress leaders have strongly supported the resolution, asserting that Singh deserves the award for his invaluable contributions to the nation.

Congress Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha, Pramod Tiwari, has urged the Centre to accept the resolution, adding that Manmohan Singh was a great leader of the country and deserves the Bharat Ratna, as per the Indian Express.

Congress national spokesperson Subharansh Kumar Rai sought the award for the former PM hailing his schemes like the Right to Education, Right to Information, MNREGA and others. He said Manmohan Singh deserves nothing less than the highest civilian award.

Meanwhile, the political parties in Telangana, including the BRS and BJP, have unanimously agreed to install Manmohan Singh’s statue at a prominent location in Hyderabad.

The BJP has rebuked the Congress over the demand, asserting that former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had not responded to Pranab Mukherjee's recommendations in 2013, who sought Bharat Ratna for the former PM.

“Instead of passing resolutions in the Assembly, Reddy should ask Sonia Gandhi, as disclosed by Sharmishtha Mukherjeeji, why was a similar proposal floated by Pranab and sent to (Singh’s principal secretary) Pulok Chatterjee not taken forward in a proper manner. Why was the Bharat Ratna not conferred upon the first Sikh PM of India? It only shows that the (Gandhi) family is insecure of any non-Nehru-Gandhi PM,” the Indian Express quoted BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla as saying.
