WITH an overwhelming majority of votes, the United States Senate on Thursday approved the appointment of Indian-American Richard Verma as the new Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources. This position is considered, in the powerful US State Department, to be equivalent to that of a CEO of an organisation, according to a PTI report.
In a House that is nearly divided in two equal parts between Democrats along with Independents that caucus with them (51 seats) and the Republicans (49), Verma (nominated by the Democrat-ruled administration) received 67 votes in his favour. 26 Senators voted against his appointment to the post.
