Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder: The Meghalaya Police revealed that Sonam Raghuvanshi, prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, has admitted to hiding his jewellery in a specific location, and investigators are working to trace it. Authorities are now actively pursuing this lead. “We will be looking into that,” Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang confirmed during a press briefing, as quoted by PTI.
She added that Sonam mentioned having placed the jewellery in a “particular place.”
The case came to light after newlyweds Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi were reported missing on May 23 while on their honeymoon in Meghalaya. The situation took a tragic turn on June 2, when Raja’s body was discovered in a steep gorge close to a waterfall in the Sohra region, commonly referred to as Cherrapunji, in East Khasi Hills district.
While authorities were still tracing Sonam’s whereabouts, she surfaced in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh approximately 1,200 kilometres away from the murder location and surrendered to the local police in the early hours of June 9.
Investigations later revealed a chilling plot: Sonam allegedly conspired with her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, to eliminate her husband just weeks into their marriage. Police said the couple had enlisted three men: Akash Thakur, Anand Kurmi, and Vishal Chauhan to carry out the murder. All three are known to be friends, and one of them is reportedly Raj’s cousin.
Speaking to PTI, DGP Nongrang said that although the motive appears to be a “love triangle,” officers are exploring multiple angles. “We are investigating whether there is anything more to this case. It is unusual that within a few days of marriage, she (Sonam) would develop so much animosity against her husband,” she said.
“We are exploring all possible angles for this murder to have taken place. We have enough evidence, and loose ends are being tied up. We have a solid case,” she further stated.
In another breakthrough, Meghalaya Police recovered a second machete that was allegedly used in Raja’s killing. According to officials quoted by Hindustan Times, the weapon featuring a steel handle was found in the gorge near Weisawdong Falls, the same location where Raja’s body had been retrieved earlier this month.
The discovery came during a reconstruction of the crime scene in Sohra district with all four accused present.
