In a shocking statement, an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in West Bengal’s Ranaghat said that men are bound to behave mischievously and that women should restrain them.

ASP Laltu Halder remarked while addressing a public event in the city. He said he feels ashamed to witness women consuming alcohol in public during a procession.

The remark by Laltu Halder came while he was addressing a public event in the city. In the widely circulated purported video on social media, Halder could be heard saying, "I feel ashamed to say this. In a procession, young women were seen drinking alcohol while standing on the road. If this is considered the glory of a procession, then I condemn such a procession."

"Nowadays, girls drink more alcohol than boys. I have seen girls standing on the streets drinking alcohol during Kali Puja. This has crossed the line of shame," he added.

He further added, "Men are bound to behave mischievously. It is women’s duty to restrain them." Blaming women, Halder said that now it is women themselves who are consuming alcohol and causing chaos. "As a result, society is heading towards ruin," he added.

Earlier, a statement by West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on the gangrape of a medical student at Durgapur sparked a political firestorm as she questioned why the girl was out of the institute at 12:30 am, adding that girls should also be careful about their safety.

Speaking to the media on October 11, she said, "Especially girl children at nighttime... they should not be allowed to come outside. They have to protect themselves also."

She also emphasised that the private medical colleges must also take responsibility for the students, as the police can't keep a watch everywhere.

She said, "If someone goes out at 12:30 a.m... anyone can go anywhere that is their right... but there is a system for those who stay in hostels."

The comment was widely criticised and later CM Mamata clarified that her statement was taken out wrong context.
