Astronomy experts think that what people saw was a special kind of meteor called a bolide. When a bolide enters Earth's atmosphere, it gets extremely hot and breaks into many pieces. While meteors are common, witnessing an event like yesterday, a bolide, that’s so bright and visible to so many people, is very rare.

No damage was expected on Earth as the meteor likely disintegrated before reaching the ground. The rare nature of the event has ignited speculation about the size and origin of the blazing ball. While the nature of the meteor was rare, the event itself was neither rare nor isolated. It was the brightness and fragmentation of the meteor that made the event uncommon. Earlier, the American Meteor Society observed that September is a period of heightened meteor activity.

The meteor was visible only for a few seconds, but it was so bright that it outshone the city of Delhi and Neighbouring districts, coming into the notice of common people, with people describing the event as ‘surreal’ and ‘breathtaking’.
