A National Investigation Agency team has headed towards the Gagangir district of Jammu and Kashmir to probe the killings of seven people in a terrorist attack on Sunday. Headed by a Superintendent of Police (SP) rank officer, the Jammu NIA branch will assist Jammu and Kashmir police in the terror attack investigation. The NIA is also likely to take over the probe as terrorist group ‘The Resistance Front (TRF)’, an offshoot of the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the attack.

The militants aimed to cause maximum casualties as they were heavily armed, Indian Express reported, citing police sources.

Earlier, a deadly terrorist attack in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday night claimed the lives of seven people, including six construction workers and a doctor. The officials informed that at least two terrorists opened gunfire at the site, and both locals and non-locals were present in the camp.

The list of deceased included a Kashmiri doctor and six workers employed with a construction company. Among the six employees, there were three laborers, a manager, a mechanical engineer, and a designer.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured that those involved in the act will not be spared and the Indian army will strike them back. In a post on X, Shah wrote, “The dastardly terror attack on civilians in Gagangir, J&K, is a despicable act of cowardice. Those involved in this heinous act will not be spared and will face the harshest response from our security forces.”

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has described the attacks as “dastardly.” "These people were working on a key infrastructure project in the area. 2 have been killed and 2-3 more have been injured in this militant attack. I strongly condemn this attack on unarmed innocent people and send my condolences to their loved ones," he wrote in a post on X.

Lieutenant Governor of the union territory, Manoj Sinha, has also expressed his grief and claimed that full freedom was given to the security forces and no offender will go unpunished.

Providing the details related to the incident, VK Birdi, Inspector General of Police, said that the victims were rushed to the hospital after the attack, but they succumbed to their injuries. “The incident took place in a densely forested area, but security forces swiftly reached the location and cordoned off the area,” he said, quoted by Hindustan Times.

There have been four incidents where the terrorists attacked the civilians from outside the state. On 18 October, the body of Ashok Chauchan, a laborer from Bihar, was recovered in Shopian district. He was shot by a suspected terrorist in Anantnag. A migrant worker from Bihar was killed by terrorists in Anantnag on April 17. Earlier this year, Amritpal Singh, a laborer from Amritsar, was killed in the old city area of Srinagar.
