West Bengal: The family of the a fourth-grade student who was allegedly raped and murdered while returning home from tuition claimed that her body had “several injuries on the body, and her limbs seemed to be broken”. The incident has flared up tension in the region, causing widespread unrest, with locals accusing the police of negligence. This comes amid ongoing protests over the brutal assault of a female doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata.
The aunt of the victim said that the girl went missing after leaving for tuition on Friday afternoon and did not return home. Her father approached the Jayanagar police station that evening to file a missing persons report, but the police refused to take the complaint. Later, the villagers found her body on the bank of the River Ganges in Kripakhali village on Saturday morning, triggering widespread protest against the state police for inaction. Locals claim the girl was raped and murdered.
“Her father tried to find her everywhere, but he was not able to find her. After this, he went to the police station, but the police refused to listen to him and asked him to go to the Jayanagar Police station…The police neglected the matter,” she said, as quoted by news agency ANI.
West Bengal Police Responds
Baruipur Superintendent of Police Palash Dhali said they lodged a complaint after her family approached them because the victim did not return home from her tuition until 8 pm.
“Yesterday evening the girl went out and when she did not return home till 8 pm, the family approached the police and lodged a complaint. Yesterday itself we started the investigation. After investigation, today we detained a person, he said that he had killed the girl,” the police said.
As part of the investigation, police are also looking into whether the child was sexually assaulted before her death.

Rupantar Goswami, additional superintendent of police, confirmed, “One suspect has been arrested. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and we will be checking for any signs of sexual assault. The motive behind the abduction and killing is still unclear.”
Protest Erupts In West Bengal
People held a protest in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal on Sunday, accusing the police of inaction.

On Saturday, a similar protest was held by the angry residents. They chanted slogans against the police and forced the officers who arrived at the scene to retreat. The protesters also vandalised the local Mahishmari police post and the house of the accused.
The situation escalated as the mob set fire to the police post and blocked the main road in the area. Armed with sticks and rods, the protesters, including women, chased the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Baruipur. In an attempt to disperse the crowd, police deployed tear gas.

Police have arrested the accused, identified as Mostakin Sardar, while an investigation is underway. However, the area remains tense, with heavy police deployment in place to maintain law and order situation in the region.
