A Dalit man was allegedly assaulted and humiliated by four villagers after he protested against illegal mining in Madhya Pradesh’s Katni district. Following a complaint, police investigated the incident and registered a case against the four men.

According to ASP Dr Santosh Deharia, the incident occurred on October 14 in Matwara village, under the Sleemanabad police station area, about 45 kilometres from the district headquarters. Identified as Ramanuj Pandey, Ram Bihari Pandey, Pawan Pandey, and Satish, the four allegedly assaulted, insulted and even urinated on the victim, Rajkumar Chaudhary.

Rajkumar Chaudhary had filed a complaint with the Superintendent of Police, alleging that he had protested against the filling of gravel in the village Panchayat building. He alleged that Sarpanch Ramanuj Pandey was conducting illegal mining near his farm.

Upon Chaudhary’s protest, Ramanuj, his son Pawan Pandey, Ram Bihari Kachhi, and Satish assaulted him, hurled caste-based insults, and urinated on him. They also threatened to kill him if he reported the matter to the police.

Police have registered a case against the four under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The ASP stated that all four are absconding, and efforts are underway to apprehend them.

A similar incident in the state's Sidhi district had previously made national headlines and become a major issue during the state assembly elections that year, where a tribal youth was urinated upon.
