The Health Ministry on Sunday announced that India reported a suspected case of mpox in a man who recently returned from a country experiencing an outbreak. The patient, who is in stable condition, has been isolated in a hospital. While the specific strain of mpox is yet to be determined, tests are underway to confirm the infection, the health ministry said in a statement.
The Health Ministry stated that the case is being managed according to established protocols, with contact tracing in progress to identify potential sources of infection and assess the situation within the country. "There is no cause for undue concern," the ministry assured, adding that the country is well-prepared to handle isolated cases of travel-related infections.

Mpox typically causes mild symptoms, including flu-like signs and pus-filled lesions on the body. The virus spreads through direct contact with an infected person, particularly through body fluids or lesions and sexual contact. Unlike Covid-19, mpox does not spread through the respiratory route. Therefore, avoiding direct contact with infected individuals can help break the transmission chain.

India has been on high alert since a new strain of mpox became prevalent in Africa. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a public health emergency after identifying the new variant.
