A huge crowd of people showed up in Mumbai's Kalina on Tuesday for a job interview conducted by the Air India Airport Services Ltd (AIASL). The company started walk-in interviews for 1,800 vacancies for the post of a handyman, who performs various repairs and maintenance tasks, and for utility agents. Videos on social media show thousands of people rushing towards the interview centre.

The turnout was much higher than expected, with over 15,000 to 18,000 people reportedly coming to apply for the positions. The large crowd caused a chaotic situation, and to prevent any problems, the organisers asked the applicants to submit their resumes and leave. The General Secretary of the Aviation Industry Employees Guild, George Abram said the recruitment process was "mismanaged" and claimed that 50,000 jobseekers had turned up for the interview.

"There were around 50,000 youths who turned up as per my sources there. We had warned the company against such drives. There was a 1 km-long queue. Police had to be called. Applicants were asked to leave their application, and they would be called later. There are vacancies for 1,786 handyman and 16 utility agents. This shows the joblessness among youths," Abram said as quoted by India Today.

While the union claimed 50,000 applicants, the AIASL CEO, Rambabu Chintalacheruvu, said around 15,000 people had come to submit their application forms. The Mumbai incident comes days after a viral video showed hundreds of jobseekers pushing and shoving each other at a walk-in interview for a private firm in Ankleshwar, Gujarat. Nearly 1,800 aspirants had turned up for a recruitment drive that had just 10 job openings, NDTV reported.
