Mumbai-Pune Expressway: Vehicles Stranded For 18 Hours After Gas Tanker Overturns; NDRF-SDRF Teams Deployed

Mumbai-Pune Expressway: 18 hours after a gas tanker overturned on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, traffic continues to remain blocked. Thousands of vehicles are stranded, causing massive congestion on both sides of the expressway. Vehicles remained stranded near the accident site overnight. By Wednesday morning, the traffic jam had stretched over 12 kilometres, jagran.com reported.

Gas Still Leaking From Tanker

Officials said flammable propylene gas is still leaking from the tanker. Officials from NDRF, SDRF, and BPCL have been deployed to handle the situation. The operation is expected to continue until late evening before normal traffic can resume.

The Traffic Police have appealed to motorists to avoid travelling on the expressway until normal traffic resumes. 

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is India's first 6-lane wide concrete, access-controlled toll expressway. It spans a distance of 94.5 km and connects Mumbai, Raigad, and Navi Mumbai to Pune.

When Did The Accident Happen?

According to the expressway control room, the gas tanker overturned on the highway around 5 pm on Tuesday. An official said the incident occurred near the Adoshi Tunnel in Raigad district when the tanker lost control due to a steep slope and overturned. Immediately after the accident, gas began leaking from the tanker.
