Mumbai Weather News: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that India's financial capital, Mumbai, has recorded the second-driest August in the last 10 years with a monthly rainfall deficit of about 60 per cent. The IMD has also predicted that Mumbai will not receive rain in the next 10 days.

According to a report by the Times of India, in contrast to the usual monthly quota of 566.4mm, the IMD Santacruz observatory recorded 177mm of rainfall in August this year. "The rainfall recorded over the past few days has been nil and September also does not look very promising", said an IMD official, as quoted by the Times Of India.

According to Sushma Nair, a scientist at IMD Mumbai, the monsoon trough remained at the foothills of the Himalayas after August 5. This is what caused the dry weather throughout August.

"Along with it, the monsoon flow over the Arabian Sea was also insufficient. One low pressure system had developed, although it wasn't particularly likely to bring Mumbai or the nearby areas any heavy rain. Due to moisture and strong westerly gusts, significant rainfall of 45 mm was reported on August 26. The IMD Colaba observatory recorded only 10.2mm of rain because it mostly rained in the suburbs," she said, as quoted by the Times of India.

After two weeks of delay, the monsoon season began over Mumbai on June 25. Since then, the city has consistently seen rain, and in June, 549.1mm of rain was recorded, exceeding the average of 537mm. In contrast to the city's average monthly quota of 855.7mm, July observed 1,769.8mm of rainfall. In fact, Mumbai had received the required 2,318.8mm of rainfall by July 31.

When compared to the total requirement of 14 lakh million litres, the total water stocks in the seven catchment area lakes were 90.4% or about 13.1 lakh million litres. The 10% water cut implemented by the BMC on July 1 has also been revoked.
