Mumbai: A 26-year-old woman, Vishakha Tilkar, allegedly died by suicide at her home in Ambernath near Mumbai, less than two months after her marriage. Following the incident, Vishakha's family has accused her doctor husband and in-laws of subjecting her to physical and mental harassment.

'Pressured To Bring Jewellery And Money': Family

The couple married on April 30. According to the victim's family, everything appeared fine before the wedding, but the situation changed soon after. The family alleged that her in-laws were upset over the amount of gifts and the level of 'respect' they received during the marriage ceremony.

"She was constantly pressured to bring jewellery and money from her parents' home," a family member told NDTV.

CCTV To Monitor Her Every Move

Vishakha's family further alleged that her husband, Nitin Tilkar, had installed CCTV cameras both inside and outside their house to monitor her movements. According to the family, she was assaulted whenever she attempted to interact with neighbours or outsiders.

"Nitin Tilkar had installed CCTV cameras inside and outside the house to monitor her every move. Whenever she spoke to anyone, she would be brutally beaten upon returning home," he added.

Thrashed For Talking To A Female Neighbour

They further alleged that just two days before her death, she was physically assaulted for speaking to a female neighbour.

"Two days before she died by suicide, she was thrashed for talking to a female neighbour. Driven to despair, she took her own life," he added.

Vishakha had informed her mother about the abuse she was facing. According to the report, her parents had already begun making arrangements to bring her back home when they learned that she had hanged herself.

Following the incident, a case was registered at Shivajinagar Police Station in Ambernath against Nitin Tilkar, his mother Chhaya, and brother Ninad on charges of mental and physical harassment and abetment to suicide. While Nitin has been arrested, a hunt is on for the other two accused.
