He mentioned that several petitions have been filed on this matter and urged that a quick hearing was necessary. Along with Sibal, senior advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Nizam Pasha also mentioned other petitioners' cases and requested an expedited hearing.
In addition, the Indian Muslim League, AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan and the non-governmental organisation– Association for Protection of Civil Rights– have filed petitions in the Supreme Court.
In this regard, CJI Khanna mentioned that there is an established procedure for mentioning, and the petitioners should send a letter or email for a request for an urgent hearing. Sibal confirmed that he had already done so, to which the Chief Justice replied that he would look into it later in the afternoon and consider listing the case for hearing.
The first petition was filed by Congress MP Mohammad Javed, followed by one from AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi. Jamiyat-Ulma-E-Hind's Maulana Arshad Madani also filed a petition, in which an interim order was sought to halt the implementation of the law. A petition was also filed by the Kerala Jamiat Ul-Ulma.
